FAMILY AND CONSUMER SCIENCE

Family and Consumer Science education opportunities have been so beneficial to students because of the skills they learn along the way. Students have learned health and fitness, fashion marketing/ sewing, child development, personal finance, interior design, and communication skills. These are key skills in helping students choose a career for the future.

At Holmen High School (HHS), almost every single student has taken at least one consumer science class through their high school years. These type of classes are generally the more laid back, fun, but educating classes. More often than not, students grow up without a lot of consumer science education, whether from the home, or their school. The basic common activities are cooking, managing money, raising a family, and fashion marketing/sewing.

“The purpose is to prepare students for the work of family and to develop skills necessary for the world of work.” Though families play a large role in independent lives and the society, we are also taught to care and help others. At HHS, the classes taught under consumer science, allows students to think and reason in different ways. To help, not just in our homes, but in our community, everyone needs to join together. “[...] students need to develop the knowledge, attitudes, and skills to be in contributing members of families to deal creatively with job-related concerns now and in the future” (HHS Site).
